Charles Campbell (1807-1876) was born on 1 May 1807, in Petersburg, Virginia, the firstborn child of parents John Wilson Campbell (d.1842), and Mildred Walker Moore Campbell. Born in Colrain, Mass., and moved to Bennington, Vt., with his family before 1770; like his father was owner of a general store. He apparently started the business with Solomon Henderson ca. 1791 but partnership was dissolved and Henry became sole owner in 1797; served as town representative from 1805-1811, justice of the peace, 1801-1840, and probate judge, 1821-1824.
